Styrofoam is often space-consuming. It is estimated that by volume, it takes much as much as thirty percent of landfills worldwide. This situation adds on to the problem of disposing styrofoam.
"America’s current level of recycling saves the equivalent of more than 5 billion gallons of gasoline, reducing dependence on foreign oil by 114 million barrels" (Source: Sierra Club).
"Aside from reducing GHG emissions, which contribute to global warming, recycling also reduces air and water pollution associated with making new products from raw materials" (Source: US EPA).
What can I do?
(1) Promote recycling at home and work (2) If you live in apt., ask your landlord what plans are underway to set up recycling and how you help get it going
(3) Get involved with the City's pathway to zero waste projects
